Abstract

Summary and conclusion
Examination of the small bowel represents a challenge for endoscopists
due to its length and inaccessibility using natural orifices. The advent of
video capsule endoscopy (VCE) in year 2000 dramatically changed the
diagnostic evaluation of small intestinal diseases. The current study aimed
to determine the diagnostic yield of video capsule endoscopy (VCE) in
patients with suspected small bowel diseases among our population in the
middle of Nile Delta.
22 patients (12 males and 10 females) with obscure gastrointestinal
bleeding (OGIB) or suspected other small bowel disease with upper &
lower endoscopy were negative.
All cases included in the study were subjected to the following:
-Full history taking
-Clinical examination
-Laboratory investigations:
1. Urine and stool analysis.
2. Complete Blood Count (CBC).
3. Random blood glucose.
4. Liver function tests:
- Serum bilirubin.
- Liver enzymes (ALT, AST).
- Serum albumin.
- Prothrombin activity.
5. Kidney functions.
6. Fecal occult blood test (in selected patients).
7. Radiologic examination:
