Abstract

Cystoid macular edema or CME, is a painless disorder which affects the central retina or macula. When this condition is present, multiple cyst-like (cystoid) areas of fluid appear in the macula and cause retinal swelling or edema. It accompanies a variety of diseases such as retinal vein occlusion, uveitis, or diabetes. It most commonly occurs after cataract surgery. The multifocal ERG (mf-ERG) technique was developed to provide a topographic measure of retinal electrophysiological activity. It can provide an objective assessment of retinal function, and its sensitivity in detecting functional abnormalities has been demonstrated in various macular disorders associated with diabetes mellitus and retinal vein occlusion. The aim of this work was to study the role of MF-ERG in the follow up of CME after intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide. In this study 30 patients with CME were classified into three groups: G1: Diabetic patients with cystoid macular edema (21 eyes) in which the mean age was 39.5±7.89.Ten patients were male and eleven patients were females. G2: BRVO patients associated with CME (6 eyes) in which the mean age was 51.67±8.1.Four patients were male and two patients were females. G3: Pseudophakic patients with CME (3 eyes) in which the mean age was 48.6±10.two patients were males and one patient was female. Intravitreal injection of triamcinolone acetonide was performed in all eyes in the operating theater under aseptic conditions. Best corrected visual acuity, IOP, CMT and MF-ERG were measured before and after injection. Patients were followed up every month for three months. Our result showed marked improvement in BCVA among the studied groups and it was significant especially in pseudophakic patients at three months after injection. There was great decrease in CMT among the studied groups and it was significant in diabetic patients at three months after injection.
