Abstract

Objectives : Strontium ranelate and hyaluronic acid are reported to enhance bone healing. However, few studies have evaluated the effect of strontium ranelate and hyaluronic acid after impacted third molar surgery. To assess the effectiveness of strontium ranelate and hyaluronic acid on bone healing after surgical removal of impacted third molar. Methods : 28 patients with a mean age 29 years who required surgical removal of 32 impacted third molars were included in this study. Patients were equally and randomly divided into 4 equal groups. After tooth extraction, strontium ranelate and hyaluronic acid were placed in sockets of group (1), strontium ranelate was placed in group (2), hyaluronic acid was placed in group (3), while group (4) served as control. Bone healing was evaluated 1 and 3 months postoperatively. Results : After 1 month, no significant difference was recorded between any of the study groups and the control group regarding bone formation. After 3 months, only group (1) showed a statistically significant difference when compared with the control group (P=0.04)Conclusions : The combination between strontium ranelate and hyaluronic acid can enhance bone formation.
