Abstract

Background: The aim of this study is to determine whether oncoplastic surgery ensures accurate and wider tumor resection with adequate safety margin in comparison with standard wide local excision, and to provide better cosmetic outcome after breast reconstructive surgery determined by patient’s satisfaction.
Methods: A prospective comparison of patients underwent breast conservation from January 2012 to June 2016 at Ain Shams University Hospitals, enrolled diagnosed breast cancer Patients who underwent Oncoplastic Breast Conserving S surgery or wide local excision . The two groups compared as regards, tumor characters, biology, margin clearance, complications and the cosmetic outcome.
Results: Twenty patients underwent oncoplastic surgery and the data was compared
with 20 patients of wide local excision. Tumour size and weight were significantly larger in patients treated with oncoplastic surgery. There were no differences found between the groups as regards the margin clearance, local recurrence, the rate of complications, and cosmetic outcome.
Conclusions: Oncoplastic surgery adds to the oncological safety of Breast Conserving Surgery by excising a larger tumours, a wider surgical margins and better cosmetic results.
