Abstract

Leflunomide is one of (the Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drugs) which is used in the treatment of many diseases as rheumatoid arthritis owing to its effects in reducing pain, improving functional status and decreasing the possible resulting disability. It acts by inhibiting mitochondrial enzyme dihydroorotate dehydrogenase enzyme; results in decreasing the rate of DNA synthesis so it inhibits the reproduction of activated autoimmune lymphocytes. Leflunomide has many pathological effects on many organs e.g stomach by reducing the level of nitric oxide. L-arginine is non-essential amino acid that can be synthesized inside the body but sometimes it is needed to be supplied from outside by food. It is widely distributed in different animal foods and plants as beef, cheese, milk, peanuts and flour. It has antioxidant properties as it gets rid of superoxide anions and hydrogen peroxide. It is the immediate precursor of nitric oxide
(NO) that involved in many physiological processes. It also plays an important role in cell division, removal of ammonia from the body and
healing of wounds. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of anti-rheumatic drug leflunomide on the histological structure of the fundic mucosa of the stomach of adult male albino rat and the possible protective effect of Larginine.
