Abstract

The aim of this study was to record the subjective and objective
success of the functional endoscopic sinus surgery in cases of diffuse
sinonasal polyposis, and to assess the role of some factors on this outcome.
Therefore, we assessed the recurrence rate of nasal polypi after
functional endoscopic sinus surgery and evaluated the role of some factors
including asthma, aspirin sensitivity, tissue eosinophilia, and some cytokines
including IL-5 & IL-16 on that recurrence.
Hundred patients with bilateral diffuse sinonasal polyposis not
responding to medical treatment were included in the study. They were all
scheduled for functional endoscopic sinus surgery and followed up for a period
between 24-36 months. Preoperatively, history was taken properly with special
interest on history of both asthma and aspirin sensitivity, endoscopic
examination and questionnaire (VAS) were done. All patients had CT scans
which were graded according to Lund-Mackay system. All patients underwent
ESS under general anesthesia and all operations were done by the same
surgeon with the same technique to exclude the role of any surgical variation
on the outcome of FESS to weigh properly the impact of the aforementioned
factors on the recurrence rate. Specimens from both nasal polypi and inferior.
