Abstract

Umbilical cord blood has become one of the most common sources of stem cells. It is used widely as an alternative to bone marrow for stem cells transplantation As processing and cryopreservation of UCB units are considered an expensive processes and the relatively low stem cell dose of UCB units, The present study was conducted on 50 UCB units collected from mothers undergoing caesarian section in department of obstetrics and gynecology, Mansoura university hospitals. Units were processed in Mansoura Research Center for Cord Stem Cells (MARC-CSC). Mononuclear cells were separated and TNC, CD34+ count and CFU assay were done for each unit.We found significant effect of maternal and neonatal factors on quality of CBU So, we concluded that Umbilical cord blood donations associated with high quality are:- Units with volume ≥ 80 ml. Units collected from infants born with birth weight ≥ 3500 gm.- Units collected from male fetus. - Units collected from infants born with gestational age ≤ 37 weeks.- Units collected from mothers aged ˃ 20 years.
