Abstract

This study was designed to evaluate the clinical impact of collagen cone on tissue healing after surgical extraction of mandibular third molars. Methods: Twenty-four patients. Patients were equally and randomly divided into 2 groups; control and study group. After tooth extraction, no material was placed in sockets of control group while, absorbable collagen cone was placed in sockets of study group. The evaluated criteria were pain, analgesic consumption, swelling, trismus, bleeding, soft tissue healing and socket complications encountered during the first postoperative week. Bone healing was evaluated 3 months postoperatively. Results: Radiographic evaluation revealed acceleration in bone formation, no statistically significant difference recorded after 3 months. Collagen cone decreased pain, bleeding tendency, trismus, swelling, socket complication, and soft tissue healing. However, no significant difference was found between both groups. Conclusions: Collagen cone application after mandibular third molars extraction is an effective method in acceleration of bone healing and reduction of postoperative complications including pain, swelling, trismus, bleeding, soft tissue healing and socket complications.
