Abstract

Background: Oral squamous cell carcinoma is the most common oral malignancy. The prevalence of OSCC has been reported in more than 90% of all oral cancers. Molecular changes that might indicate early tumor development are seen in normal surgical margins of tumors in the oropharynx and larynx regions. Aim : This study was aimed to detect EGFR and Her-2 in OSCC and it’s surrounding healthy epithelium and identify it’s relation to clinical parameters : site, grade, size and nodal metastasis and the possible significance with DAS and DFS for the patients. Materials and Methods : In this study 40 samples represents 40 recurrent cases were obtained from OCMU during the years from (2010 – 2016).Then markers expression were detected immunohistochemically in tumor area and in healthy epithelium. Result : marked expression for Her-2 in both tumor and healthy epithelium areas while weak results were noted regarding EGFR in both areas. Despite of the high results of Her-2, significance were noted only with nodal metastasis and DAS in tumor areas and with nodal metastasis only in area of healthy epithelium. Conclusions : The EGFR expression is present in area of healthy epithelium surrounding tumor in an increased rate. A great increase in Her-2 expression in both tumor and the surrounding area of healthy epithelium was noted, and This was correlated with nodal metastasis and disease all survival. Recommendations : We recommend that further studies with a larger sample size and longer follow up periods are needed to investigate the role of EGFR expression in prognosis of OSCC cases. Her-2 could be used as a prognostic marker for nodal metastasis and the disease overall survival of the patients.
