Abstract

Introduction: Bipolar disorder (BD) is a debilitating mood condition that affects approximately 1.5% of people worldwide, although some studies report up to 3.9% life time prevalence and 4-6% in adults when broad diagnostic criteria are applied. Aim of the Study: This study aimed to: To show whether patients with first episode bipolar disorder type I during euthymia show different pattern and deficits in neurocognitive performance compared to well match apparently healthy control. To identify white matter characteristics of those patients compared with control group. To correlate between the white matter characteristics and neurocognitive impairment in these patients. Subjects and Methods: The study will be conducted in the Neuro-psychiatric department at the Institute of Psychiatry Ain Shams University located in Al Albasya, Cairo. It serves Urban and rural areas providing health services to different social classes. Results: Results in this chapter were grouped to answer the following questions: Are there differences between bipolar I group and healthy control group as regard socio-demographic data, cognitive functions, diffusion tensor imaging findings?
Discussion: To our knowledge, this’s one of the earliest studies to investigate the correlation between white matter abnormalities seen by DTI and cognitive functions in first episode euthymic bipolar patients not in the general bipolar disorder population.
