Abstract

Introduction: Eating behaviors are most common with young adolescent. Body image, self-esteem and other psychosocial variables mutually interact with eating disorders. Psychiatric Comorbidities do coexist with eating disorders. Aim of the study To study the presence of different eating patterns among a sample of first year female medical students in the Faculty of medicine, To identify the co-morbidities in other Axis I deisorders with such eating patterns, To highlight the correlation between psychosocial variables, body image dissatisfaction and self-esteem with such eating patterns. Subjects and methods: This is a cross sectional study. A random sample of 250 female first year medical students were screened using EAT-40, body image scale, self-esteem scale. Those with positive EAT-40 were screened for other psychiatric comorbidities using SCID-1. Results: The prevalence of eating attitude problem was …… . the difference between EAT-40 positive and negative cases regarding BMI, self-esteem. Body image score difference was not statistically significant. Most prevalent disorder was eating disorder not other wise specified. The most common comorbidity was both anxiety and depression. Conclusions: ED-NOS was the most prevalent disorder. Body image dissatisfaction is significantly more in EAT-40 positive cases.
