Abstract

The examiner stood behind each participant and rotated their head in the horizontal plane and vertical plane resulting in stimulation of all SCCs.
Participants underwent a minimum of 20 head impulses in each direction. A group of asymptomatic controls (n=25) were tested too using the same test protocol. Their age were ranging from 25-68 with mean age 48 years old. There was no statistically significant difference between study and control group either in age, or gender.
The results of the study pointed to statistical significant correlation between the duration of BPPV and vHIT results. Patients who complained for short durations (not exceeding 3-4 months) had totally normal vHIT, while those who had longer duration exhibited abnormalities in vHIT. Also, vHIT can be useful in cases of multiple canal affection, which is hard to diagnose. There was a statistical significant difference between vHIT and VNG in detecting multiple canals. vHIT was superior to VNG in detecting multiple canal BPPV.
