Abstract

Infertility is a common condition with important psychologic, economic, demographic, and medical implications. It is defined as failure of a couple to conceive after 12 months of regular intercourse without use of contraception in women less than 35 years of age; and after six months of regular intercourse without use of contraception in women 35 years and older.
Helicobacter pylori, a Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes the stomach, is the main etiologic factor in the development of gastritic and extragastric complications. It is thought that there is a relationship between H.pylori infection and reduced fertility in men as there is a cross linear homology between spermatozoa and bacterium flagellum and increased levels of inflammatory cytokines in blood.
In this study we have studied 133 male infertile patients, 65 of them had abnormal semen analysis and the rest 68 patients had normal semen analysis and 65 normal fertile control according to their semen analysis and H.pylori serology IgG .we have found that seropositivity was statistically higher in infertile men than normal fertile ones . Also it was statistically higher in infertile men with abnormal semen analysis than infertile ones with normal semen analysis. This have shown that there would be evidence on the effect of H.pylori infection on male fertility, however we have failed to find a statistically significant effect of H.pylori infection upon semen analysis parameters in cases with abnormal semen analysis.
Lastly, we have believed in the effect of H.pylori on male fertility, however, we have failed to prove its effect on semen analysis parameters. We recommends further studies studying the effect of Helicobacter pylori infection on infertility in general and its effect on male fertility in specific.
