Abstract

Objective: To determine prevalence of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in miscarriage among women with one or more early miscarriages in rural areas in Fayoum governorate.
Methods: 60 women attended at the Fayoum University hospital outpatient gynecology clinic were diagnosed as had one or more early miscarriage, all were subjected to serum samples examined to detect IgM / IgG to Chlamydia trachomatis , Endocrvical swab was taken and examined by PCR from (+ve samples to ) IgM / IgG ).
Results: Mean of number of miscarriage was higher among female with infection than those without (3.20 ± 3.19 vs. 2.78 ± 1.90), but it was not statistically significant, p>0.05.
Supposing that chlamydial infection not a causative agent for miscarriage .
Conclusion: Based on our study results, it is very difficult to establish the exact prevalence and role of chlamydial infections in miscarriages. However our results showed that C. trachomatis infection has to be taken into consideration as far as pregnancy
failures are concerned. Further studies should be conducted on a larger number of patients to evaluate prevalence and role of chlamydial infection in miscarriage.
