Abstract

The present work aimed to investigate the effect of Echinacea either before or after infection, alone or in combination with enrofloxacin on P. multocida infection in White New Zealand rabbits through the evaluation of hematological, biochemical, oxidative stress markers, phagocytic activities and the associated pathological lesions.
This study was carried out on one hundred and ten, 30 days old, male White New Zealand rabbits (750-1000 gm average body weight) these rabbits were divided into 7 groups each containing 15 rabbits except group 3 was 20 rabbits.
group (1) was kept as normal control (received distilled water orally throughout experimental period).
group (2) was administrated Echinacea orally (130 mg/ kg b.w) day after day from the 1st to 35 day of the experiment.
group (3) was experimentally infected with P. multocida type A intranasally in a dose of 1ml (4x107 organism) at 14th days from the beginning of the experiment (FBE).
group (4) was orally administrated Echinacea and infected with P. multocida type A as in the 2nd and 3rd groups.
group (5) was infected with P. multocida type A (4x107 organism) intranasally at the 14th day FBE, then treated with E.purpurea after appearance of clinical signs with the same route and dose as in gp. 4 for 3 wks.
group (6) was infected with P. multocida type A at 14th days FBE then treated with enrofloxacin (10 mg / kg.b.wt in drinking.
