Abstract

The present study aims at minimizing the Egyptian wheat grain loss in quantity and deterioration of quality during open field storage by innovative and economic storage method. This method based on efficient control of moisture, moulds & insects in wheat grains before storage through controlled accelerated heat treatment using infra-red radiation. The heat treated grains were stored in different types of small bags and compared with the non- heat treated grain to assess the most proper type of bags for the storage process. The results show that: 1-The radiation intensity of 1.161 kW/m², exposure time of 360 sec and grain feed rate of 3 Kg /batch, are recommended for wheat grain pre-heat treatment.2-The simple exponential model (Logarithmic model) is recommended for describing the moisture loss behavior and predicting the grain moisture content during the heat treating process. 3-Storing dry grain in storage bags (Type 2 and 3) did not create a lethal environment for insects, molds and total microbial load. Also, they were not affecting the wheat quality. 4-The pilot scale storage of wheat grain (treated & non treated) showed similar results of the laboratory scale. However, the plastic bags type 3 showed better grain quality and it can be recommended for long term storage process (over 1 year) while the plastic bags type 2 can be recommended for storage time less than (1 year). Meanwhile, the pre-heat treatment showed a noticeable reduction in grain moisture content, total microbial count, and fungal count and it can be recommended for the cases of early stage wheat harvesting and/or the long term storage of wheat grain (More than 1 year).
