Abstract

Colorectal cancer is the third deadliest of all cancers. In 2016 there will be an estimated 134,490 new colorectal cancer cases. Colorectal cancer ranks third, only behind prostate cancer and lung cancer, for new cases in males (8% of all new cancer cases), and behind breast cancer and lung cancer for new cases in females (8% of all new cancer cases) (Cancer Facts & Figures, 2016).
Patients and methods: from January 2014 to December 2016 in Ain shams university Hospitals, review of retrospectively collected data of 94 attempted laparoscopic resections for colorectal cancer. Operation time, intraoperative blood loss, surgical complications, duration of hospital stay, retrieved lymph nodes, tumour grade, and their follow up were analysed.
Results: Eighty three patients completed laparoscopic resections without conversion to open surgeries, 6 patients had minor leak from the staple line, 7 patients had anal stenosis and 3 patients had perineal wound infection.
Conclusion: Laparoscopic anterior resection for low rectal cancer is feasible and can be performed safely with acceptable rates of overall postoperative morbidity and low rates of specific complications.
