Abstract

Purpose: the aim of the study is to compare the efficacy of buccal versus intranasal route of administration of midazolam spray in management of children receiving dental treatment.
Sample: A sample of 36 children ranging in age from 3 to 5 years will be participating in this study. They will be selected from the outpatient clinic of Pediatric Dentistry Department, Faculty of Dentistry, Alexandria University after securing official consents. They should be rated 1 or 2 according to the Frankl behavioral rating scale and I or II according to the ASA.
Methods: Each child should fulfill the requirements of having a dental condition which needs treatment in two dental settings, where each setting should not exceed thirty minutes. At the first visit, either buccal or intranasal midazolam spray will be used, while at the second visit the alternate route will be implemented in a cross-over design. Vital signs will be recorded at base line and at 5 minutes interval throughout the treatment session. At least one week interval between the two visits will be secured. Time until optimum sedation will be measured and child behavior will be assessed using modified Houpt scale. Post-operative recovery time will be assessed. Post-operative response will be recorded through a questionnaire designed to be filled by the parent.
Results: Data will be collected, tabulated and statistically analyzed.
