Abstract

Objective: The aim of the study is to evaluate and compare in vitro the effect of MI varnish (sodium fluoride varnish containing casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) on the remineralization of caries-like lesions in primary teeth to Prevident varnish (sodium fluoride varnish).
Materials: Forty-eight freshly extracted or exfoliated caries free primary teeth divided into two groups, group I (n=24): 5% sodium fluoride varnish containing casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) (MI varnish) and group II (n=24): 5% sodium fluoride (Prevident varnish).
Methods: Teeth will be coated with nail varnish, leaving squares of 4x4 mm before being immersed in the demineralizing solution for 4 days to produce subsurface enamel lesions (white spot lesions) on the exposed enamel surface. Each of the 48 teeth will be sectioned into 2 halves longitudinally in a buccolingual direction through the center of the window to obtain a mesial and a distal half. One half will be treated with the test varnish and the other half will remain untreated to serve as its control. Each half will be considered as a specimen (96 specimens). Teeth will be assigned into two groups: group I (MI varnish) subdivided into subgroup IA and subgroup IB and group II (Prevident varnish) subdivided into subgroup IIA and subgroup IIB.
Evaluation: The specimens will be evaluated both qualitatively and quantitatively. Half of the specimens (n=48) will be examined with the polarized light microscope. While the other halves (n=48) will be analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDX). Data will be recorded and statistically evaluated.
Keywords: MI varnish, casein phosphopeptide amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP), remineralization, sodium fluoride varnish, primary teeth.
