Abstract

Individuals spend a great deal of their time at their work, with various human interactions. The main action of health work is patient care posing a constant emotional burden and work-related stress on health professionals who perform activities in which a high degree of contact with other people is involved, whose job involves intense and sustained attention to people who are in need or dependent while relieving the suffering of patients and maintaining their dignity at the same time, as well as controlling and facilitating ways of dealing with crises in case of negative outcomes. Burnout in health care providers is a real issue and a real threat to the health care system. Several studies around the world have been carried out showing the high rates of burnout among them (Peterson, 2008).
While burnout is linked to occupational stress, it goes beyond by focusing on specific stress in the workplace to emphasize total life and environmental pressures that affect health. Burnout has been described as a response to chronic emotional strain of dealing extensively with other human beings, particularly when they are troubled (Maslach and Jackson, 1981).
Christina Maslach defines burnout as “a multi-dimensional construct comprised of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and diminished personal competence that occurs among professionals who do ‘people work’ of some kind” (Maslach 1982 P.3). Burnout is considered as a final reaction being manifested as a result of chronic stressors from the job characterized by three dimensions which are cynicism, inefficacy, and exhaustion (Maslach 1997).
Based on linear regression analysis the results assumed that:
The factors most associated with EE subscale of burnout syndrome was sex followed by years of working, smoking
The factors associated with DP subscale of burnout syndrome was years of working followed by age, hours of shift
The factors associated with PA subscale of burnout syndrome was age followed by sleeping time, lately sex .
Recommendations:
Interventional research targeting medical students, residents and practicing physicians are needed in order to improve psychological well-being, professional career enjoyment as well as the quality of care provided to patients.
It is necessary to apply systematic and continued interventions to promote health in the workplace such as workplace training, supportive feedback from supervisors, role clarification, team culture, and coping strategies.
