Abstract

Cytomegalovirus (from the Greek cyto, ”cell”, and –megalo-, ”large”) is a herpes viral genus of the Herpesviruses group : in humans it is commonly known as HCMV or Human Herpesvirus 5 Acute Lymphoblsatic Leukemia (ALL) is an acute form of leukemia, or cancer of the white blood cells, chjaracterized by the overproduction of cancerous, immature white blood cells ; known as lymphoblsts Aim of the work To declare the role of CMV in the development of cytopenia in children with ALL treated with chemotherapy in Mansoura Oncology Center (MOC). This cross-sectionaI study was performed at Mansoura OncoIogy Center (MOC) incIuding fifty patients with acute IymphobIastic Ieukeia diagnosed by Immunophenotyping (IPT) and by BM aspiration and biopsy. Our study showed that there were statistically high significant differences in the studied group at diagnosis and after induction of chemotherapy regard hematological parameters including hemoglobin concentration, white blood cell count, platelet concentration and neutrophil count. But, there were ConcIusion Our study showed that CMV infection can cause proIonged cytopenias even after conventionaI chemotherapy for AII. Serious morbidity or treatment deIays can occur as a resuIt no significant differences in the studied group at diagnosis in relation to CMV IgM.
