Abstract

The implementation of IPE courses is surely an under developed field in Health Professions Education. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a newly established IPE course for medical and nursing house officers at the Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University as well as to develop a leadership and management course to be introduced into pre- registration house officer year curriculum.
A total of 25 medical and 13 nursing house officers were included in the study, divided into six interprofessional groups; three in the Pediatrics Department and three in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department. The course was implemented at Suez Canal Teaching hospital from May to July 2013. The different interprofessional teams attended four successive workshops.
Evaluation of the course revealed that the ILM Course was perceived as feasible, valued and that it achieved its learning objectives. There was a significant improvement in the participants’ knowledge in leadership and management and their readiness for Interprofessional Education after the implementation of the course.
The focus group discussion revealed that all the study participants thought that IPE was a suitable educational approach that would create a collaborative work environment with mutual respect, cooperation and understanding of each other’s rule.
