Abstract

A Dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Tourist Guidance
This thesis aims to study land under grant in Ptolemaic, as land was the main pillar of Egyptian economy in the Ptolemaic Period. The term land under grant means plots of land granted either to institutions or to individuals. Land under grant, the subject of this thesis, included the cleruchic land, the temple or sacred land, land in gift, and private land
The study consists of five chapters:
Chapter one: Land in Ptolemaic Egypt
This chapter discusses land as a source of economic power, with special focus on the assignment and use of land. It also deals with regional diversity of land; the Arsinoite and the Thebaid will be used as two case studies. The classification of land according to inundation and ownership and the concept of ge en aphesei will finally be discussed.
Chapter Two: Cleruchic Land
This chapter addresses the cleruchic land. It begins with a consideration of the army in Ptolemaic Egypt as a vehicle for land distribution. The geography of the settlements of cleruchs and the reasons for granting land to soldiers as well as the different types of cleruchic land will also be considered. This chapter also explores the organization of the cleruchic land, taxing the cleruchs, the administrators of the cleruchic system and the billets of the cleruchs.
Chapter Three: Temple Land
This chapter focuses on the land of the temples or the sacred land in Fayum and Upper Egypt. They are two case studies of the temple land. The chapter also deals with the administration of the temple land. Finally, the revenues of the temple land and the obligations and taxes associated with it will be highlighted.
Chapter Four: The Effects of the Ptolemaic Policy on Temple Land
This chapter focuses on the positive and negative effects of the Ptolemaic policy towards the temple land.
Chapter Five: The Effects of the Ptolemaic Policy on Temple Land
The This chapter deals with “land in gift” in Ptolemaic Egypt It explores large estates of high officials under Ptolemy Philadelphus particularly those in Philadelphia and Memphis. It highlights the location, organisation, and economic structure of each estate as well as its role in the Egyptian economy. In additions, it considers the managing and working staff of each estate. It also deals with private land as a part of land under grant.
The conclusion sums up the results of the study.
