Abstract

Erosion of material surface due to solid particles has been a challenge to several fields of engineering. Despite of decades of investigations and research, the exact phenomenon of erosion of surface by the solid particles has not been fully understood well.
In the present work, the solid particle erosion of epoxy glass fiber composites (Epoxy/GF) is investigated by sand blasting equipment. Two types of glass fiber is studied (woven and random).
The impact angles (30°, 60°, and 90°), distances from the sand jet (60cm, 100cm and 160cm) and synthetic types of oil (synthetic, Paraffin and glycerin) with content (2.5, 5, 7.5, 10) filling epoxy matrix are studied. The results show a strong dependency of oil content on the material behavior from brittle to ductile. Nevertheless, the type of fiberglass shows observed effect on erosion results.
In addition, electrostatic charge is investigated at erosion wear mechanism. The Dc volt generated due to contact and separation of sand particles simultaneously with erosion process. The morphology of eroded surface is observed under microscope and damage mechanisms are discussed.
