Abstract

Our objective was to compare the sexual function of female genital mutilation (FGM) to women without FGM. The study was carried on 100 sexually active women with FGM and 100 sexually active women without FGM as our control group, at outpatient clinic of Shebin El Kom Teaching Hospital. All participants were subjected to: •History taking to determine age, age at the time of marriage, residence (urban/rural), educational level (illiterate, can read and write, secondary school or university degree), the age at time of FGC, reasons given to support the practice (Tradition, Religion, Cleanliness, Ethically or marriage), who performed the FGC (Daya, Doctors, nurses or barbers), who decided that (mother, father, the family or grandmothers), their attitude towards FGC (agree/disagree). •Gynecological examination to determine wither type І FGC (involves removal of a part of the clitoris or all of it) or type ІІ FGC (involves excision of the clitoris and
•Arabic translated version of FSFI questionnaire. Results of this study were divided into 3 parts concerning the demographic, circumcision, sexual data and FSFI.
A. As regards the demographic data: •Age of females ranged from 17 to 45 years old with mean value of 33.5±7.06 for the circumcised group and 32.7±6.64 for the uncircumcised group (mean±SD). •The results revealed that educational levels of the participants were negatively associated with FGC (P < 0.001) where, only 21% of circumcised women got a university degree, while 82% of uncircumcised got that degree. B. As regards the FGC data: •Age at which the procedure was performed ranged from 7 to 14 years old with mean value of 9.52±1.55. •Type І FGM/C is the most common type (86%). •The study proved that the practice of FGC, a deeply rooted tradition and that there are no medical benefits and it can be potentially dangerous for women’s health and psychological wellbeing. Results revealed no statistically significant differences between the 2 groups in mean desire and lubrication score (p>0.363)and (p>0.420) respectively with mean score as the following o group 1 (circumcised): 5.17±1.63 for sexual desire domain and 12.6±2.93 for lubrication domain. o group 2 (uncircumcised):5.38 ±1.62 for the sexual desire domain and 12.9±1.60 for the lubrication domain.
However, there were statistically significant differences between
the 2 groups in their scores for sexual arousal and orgasm
(p<0.0001) with higher percentage for the uncircumcised group
with mean scores as following:
o group 1 (circumcised): 12.7±3.58 for the sexual arousal domain
and 10.0±2.68 for the orgasm domain.
o group 2 (uncircumcised): 14.9 ±2.80 for the sexual arousal
domain and 11.2±2.05 for the orgasm domain.
