Abstract

BVDV is an infectious viral disease. It is important pathogen plays a role in natural infection of cattle worldwide. Other hosts can be considered as reservoirs for the BVDV that is very important in programs of BVDV eradication that usually concerned with cattle. Rabbits spread in a wide range in many countries all over the world, and are frequently living on or near farm animals pastures. Recent studies founded that BVDV propagation can be occur in rabbits through different routes of infections and that BVDV infection in rabbits may be happen, however experimentally there is a lack of data about rabbits infection naturally.
For that reason, White New Zealand rabbits were infected with two BVDV biotypes (NADL & 890) through different routes (intravenous, nasal and oral). No clinical symptoms appeared on the infected rabbits. In contrast, the lymphoid organs (GALT) from rabbits sacrificed at 5dpi showed depletion in the population of lymphocytes in some lymphatic nodules, these changes are typical to pestivirus transient infection.
BVDV RNA was detected by real time RT-PCR in samples of buffy coat taken from rabbits in intravenous cytopathic and non cytopathic groups 5dpi, but not detected in other groups. Production of antibodies was reported in all groups infected animals using ELISA; while in mock infected control group, there was no production of antibodies. The ratio of S/P in all BVDV infected rabbits of groups IV/CP and IN/CP increased after day three, while the peak was at day 14.
