Abstract
PICOT Format:
P: Circumvallate papillae, taste buds & von Ebner’s salivary glands of
Albino rats
I: Two different doses of Aspartame (40mg/kg.b.w &80mg/kg.b.w)
C: Untreated circumvallate papillae, taste buds & von Ebner’s salivary
glands of Albino rats (control group)
O: Expected structural changes in circumvallate papillae, taste buds & von
Ebner’s salivary glands
T: 3 & 6 months
The present work aimed to investigate the effect of short and long
term administration of two different doses of APM (40mg/kg.b.w
&80mg/kg.b.w) on the structural features of von Ebner’s salivary glands,
circumvallate tongue papillae and taste buds (in order to reach the possible
beneficial results in preventing and limiting the use of the artificial
sweetener APM if needed).
The tongue was examined histologically, histochemically and
immunohistochemically as following:
1- Histological examination: By Hematoxylin & Eosin (H& E) stain.
2- Histochemical examination: Periodic Acid Schiff/ Alcian blue
(PAS/AB) reaction was used.
3- Immunohistochemical staining: using Proliferating cell nuclear
antigen (PCNA) antibody.
