Abstract

The present study was carried out during three garlic storage seasons of 2014/2015, 2015/2016 and 2016/2017 at the laboratories of Department Vegetables, Faculty of agriculture, Assiut University, Assiut, Egypt. The storage experiment was made under room temperature with aim to determining quantity and quality losses for ten months in garlic cultivars when stored under different methods. Bulbs of three garlic cultivars (Sids40, Balady and Egaseed1) were stored in six storage methods: 1- hanging, 2-performed plastic bag, 3,4- plastic net,(package type), 5- paper bag and 6- plastic bag. The obtained results summarized as follows: A- Effect of garlic cultivars at the end of storage can be: 1- Weight loss percentage was lower in Sids 40 cultivar, followed by Balady cultivar, in the first and second seasons, but differences were insignificant. The highest values of weight loss obtained from Egaseed1 cultivar. On the other hand, Sids 40 ranked first in respect of sprouting and emaciation percentages. While, Balady cultivar had the lowest values of sprouting percentage. With respect to emaciation, no significant differences between the means of Balady and Egaseed1 cultivar. 2- Percentage of dry matter content, T.S.S. and total sulfate content were lower in Balady cultivar. While, Sids 40showed the highest content of dry matter and total sulfate. B- Effect of storage method: 1- Bulbs of garlic stored in plastic bags gave the lowest values of weight loss percentage, but recorded the highest values of sprouting percentage. On the other hand, cloves stored in plastic net gave the maximum weight loss percentage and minimum values of sprouting. With respect to emaciation percentage, results showed that the used storage methods had differences between the storage seasons with insignificant effect. 2- The maximum dry matter content and the minimum values of T.S.S. and total sulfate content were obtained when bulbs of garlic stored in plastic bag. C- Effect of interaction between factors of experiment: In the first season 2014/2015:- Sids 40 cultivar recorded the highest sprouting percentage (43.4%) when its bulbs stored in plastic bag (method F). On otherhand, the lowest value (1.1%) found in interaction between cloves of Egaseed 1 when stored in plastic net (method C). The highest empty cloves percentage (35.4%) was found when bulbs of Sids 40 cultivar stored in paper bag (method E), while the lowest values (3.2%) were obtained from bulbs of Egaseed 1 cultivar stored in performed plastic bag (method B). In the second season2015/2016: It is clear that Sids 40 cultivar recorded the lowest weight loss percentage when its bulbs stored in plastic bags (32.3%). Balady cultivar recorded the highest value of dry matter content (71%) when its bulbs stored by hanging (method A), while the other cultivars gave the lowest values in the other storage methods. Sids40 cultivar recorded the highest T.S.S. content (37.0%) when its cloves stored in plastic net (method C). On other hand, the lowest values found in interaction between cloves and bulbs of Balady when stored in plastic net and plastic bag (30.7%).
