Abstract

In this study we aimed to study serum preptin level in rachitic children and breast milk of their mothers. Our study included 30 rachitic children and their mothers (group A ), and 30 healthy children and their mothers which serve as control group (group B)
We excluded from the study children with well known congenital skeletal proplem as(skeletal dysplasia), metabolic bone diseases including hypophosphatasia, Hereditary disorders of vitamin D metabolism such as hypophosphatemic vitamin D–resistant rickets, Severe calcium deficiency that cause a syndrome that is confused with vitamin D deficiency rickets.
All children included in the study were subjected to clinical history taking, complete examination, anthropometric measurements as well as laboratory investigations including serum preptin of children , breast milk preptin of their mothers , serum levels of calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase.
Our study showed:
Significantly lower values in rachitic children than controls regarding weight and length .
HC was significantly increased in rachitic children in comparison to controls
Mothers of rachitic children were significantly older in age with higher mean for weights and BMI.
Significant decrease in serum phosphorus level in rachitic children group when compared to control group with significant elevation of serum alkaline phosphatase and insignificant difference in total calcium level between both groups.
Statistically significant decrease in rachitic children group when compared to healthy controls regarding serum preptin and breast milk preptin levels.
There was a significant positive strong correlation was detected between breast milk preptin and rachtic infant and healthy serum preptin.
Significant weak negative correlation between age of mothers and breast milk preptin level of healthy children.
Significant strong positive correlation between breast milk preptin and rachitic infant head circumference.
Serum level of alkaline phosphatase in rachitic children was significantly elevated and there was a strong negative correlation between it and serum preptin of rachitic children.
A significant weak positive correlation between serum calcium level(mg/dl) and serum preptin level in normal children.
