Abstract

The orbital region plays predominant role in the evaluation of the craniofacial complex. The upper third of the face including eyelids and eyebrows has an important role in beauty and facial expression. The periorbital soft tissue are influenced by age, ecological, biological, geographical, gender and racial factors. No current normative data exist for Egyptian subjects. The anthropometric measurements of the periorbital soft tissue were taken for 200 Egyptian subjects: 100 male and 100 female. Statistically we found significant differences of the periorbital soft tissue measurements according to gender for inter-inner canthal width, and highly significant for inter-outer canthal width, horizontal palpebral fissure, and no significant difference for the other measurements. There are differences between our results and that of the other international studies that ensure changing of the measurements according to the age, sex, geographical areas and racial factors. Conclusion: We did the study to provide the literature normative database of the periorbital soft tissue of the Egyptian young adults, as there was not any database before. These measurements may help the Egyptian plastic surgeons, oculoplastic surgeons and maxillofacial surgeons to reconstruct this area after maxillofacial trauma and congenital deformities. Also they can use them in aesthetic facial surgeries.
