Abstract

A total of 258 patients with chronic pulmonary diseases were enrolled in the study with mean± SD of age 47.7±17.7, they were randomized into five groups (97 COPD, 45 ILD ,80 Broncial asthma, 17 Bronciectasis and 19 TB) at chest department Minia university hospital and chest hospital during the period from November 2015 to January 2017, patients were enrolled from both the outpatient clinic and the inpatient department.
COPD patients classified according to severity into fifteen patients had moderate disease , fifty patients had severe disease and thirty two had very severe disease according to GOLD criteria in 2015 based on post bronchodilator FEV1.
Patients with ILD classified into six patients had mild restrictive pattern , ten patients had moderate restrictive pattern and twenty nine had severe pattern according to ATS/ ERS criteria in 2005 based on FVC.
As regard asthma sixty patients had moderate disease and twenty had severe disease based on GINA 2015 criteria for asthma severity.
The main aim of this study was to evaluate prevelance of anemia in patients with chronic pulmonary diseases and its effect on quality of life.
For all patients the following was done
I-Full history taking, including history of smoking, history of chest symptoms (e.g. cough, expectoration, dyspnea, wheezes,…………), history of chronic regular medications , History of Comorbidities and MRC dyspnea scale.
2- General and local chest examination
3-Chest x ray
4-ECG
5-Echocardiography(when indicated)
6-Pulmonary function tests (PFT)
7- laboratory investigation
8- Arterial blood gases (ABG)
9-Measurements of serum Erythropoietin, iron and Total iron binding Capacity.
10-Assessment of Health related quality of life
The mean ±SD of age in our patients were 47.7±17.7 with 57.4% male and 42.6% female.
The mean± SD of age in total anemic patients was 49.3±18.3 which was older than patients with normal HB and younger than polycythemic patients.
22.5% of all patients were current smokers, 18.2% ex smokers and 59.3% were lifelong non smokers.
22% of anemic patients were current smoker, 19% Ex smoker and 59% were life long non smokers.
In COPD patients There was no difference in smoking habits between anemic and non anemic patients.
