Abstract

Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed life-threatening cancer in women and the second leading cause of cancer death among women. Treatment of Breast cancer can be classified into local therapy like surgery and radiation and systemic therapy like chemotherapy and hormonal therapy.
Neoadjuvant (or preoperative) chemotherapy is being increasingly used for the treatment of breast cancer. Response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy may convert an inoperable breast cancer to an operable tumor. By downsizing the tumor, neoadjuvant chemotherapy also increases the possibility of breast conserving therapy in larger number of patients.
This study is a prospective study for female patients treated with neoadjuvant therapy during the period from October 2015 to February 2017. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the role of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in surgical decision making in patients with breast cancer in the form of operability and /or the possibility of breast conserving surgery.
The total number of patients included in this study was 62 patients, who have Stage II and Stage III breast cancer according to the classification adopted by the NCCN 2014, all received neoadjuvant therapy. Then, clinical response was graded according to International Union.
Full course of neoadjuvant chemotherapy is necessary to achieve complete clinical and pathological response.
Almost 61% of the patients involved in this study did breast conservative surgery; a similar or even higher percentage of cases with breast conservative surgery after neoadjuvant chemotherapy were encountered in different studies.
