Abstract

Reducing job stress and elevating the perception of quality of work life contributes to higher levels of satisfaction with the provided nursing care and increasing productivity that positively influences health outcomes that lead to organizational success.
The study aimed at exploring the relationship between job stress and quality of work life among staff nurses through measuring job stress level among staff nurses, determining quality of work life perception among staff nurses and finding out the relationship between job stress and quality of work life among staff nurses.
This study was conducted at critical and non critical care units in Ain Shams University specialized hospital which affiliated to Ain Shams University using descriptive comparative correlational design. The subject for the study included staff nurses assigned to work in aforementioned setting during data collection period. Their total number is 189 nurses. 118 nurses in critical care units and 71 nurses from non critical care units with a minimum of one year experience.
Tools of data collection:
Two tools were used in this study:
I- Job stress questionnaire sheet
This tool consisted of two parts.
Part I: It aimed at collecting data related to socio demographic characteristics of the study subjects as age, qualification, years of experience, marital status, and work department etc.
Part II: Expanded Nursing Stress Scale (ENSS):
This scale was designed to measure stress level among nurses. It was adopted from French et al., (2000). It contained (63) items through subscales (death and dying, conflict with physicians, inadequate emotional preparation, problems relating to supervisors, problems relating to peers, working, uncertainty concerning treatment, patients and their families and discrimination).
II- Quality of work life questionnaire sheet
This questionnaire was designed by the national Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Institute, NIQSH, 2002) to assess the quality of work life at workplaces. The questionnaire categorized under six main headings namely; Psychological work environment, job chrematistics, salaries and incentives, team work, supervisor, leadership style, participation in decision making.
The result of the study revealed that:
- Study subjects had higher level of stress that is higher in critical care units than non critical care units (62.7% & 50.7% respectively).
- Both study subjects in critical and non critical care units had high level of stress regarding to work load, death and dying. While they had low level of stress regarding to problems with peers, conflict with doctors.
- On the other hand study subjects reported that the perception of quality of work life in critical care units was higher 72.9% than in non critical care units 56.3%.
- The highest perception of quality of work life among study subjects in both critical and non critical care units was regarding to position properties and moral work environment. While the lowest perception of quality of work among study subjects was regarding to salaries and incentives, style of supervisors.
- The result revealed that unexpectedly there was no statistical relation between job stress and quality of work life.
