Abstract

There are many factors that one can correlate to incidences of students’ burnout. Such as personal factors, organizational factors, classroom climate, personality factors or role conflict, students are likely to experience a high number of stressful situations on a regular basis. The consequences of burnout have serious implications for students, educational institution, and ultimately the profession. It lead to loose of commitments of students and intent to leave, low moral, lower human consideration.
Burnout is an organizational phenomenon almost in all institutions and organizations. Burnout is peculiar to the human and in everywhere people live burnout syndrome has been encountered. Because of the fact that all facts related to human can be managed, some measures must be taken against burnout syndrome decreasing organizational productivity and efficiency and increasing labor cost. These measures can be taken against burnout. In order to be able to show resistance against burnout, social support must be looked for and the level of communication/mutual influence must be increased instead of preferring loneliness and isolation. This measure will make the person more equipped and resistant against burnout.
Aim of study:
The present study aimed to identify burnout syndrome among students enrolled in graduate programs at faculty of Nursing, Alexandria University and determine factors leading to burnout among those students.
Material and method:
Setting of study:
The study was conducted at faculty of Nursing, University of Alexandria.
The faculty of nursing includes nine scientific departments.
Subjects of study:
The study subject included all graduate students available at time of data collection in the previous departments who were 152 students.
Tools of the study:
Data for this study were collected through two main tools namely
I- The Maslach Burnout Inventory General Survey (MBI-GS), Developed by Maslach et.al (1996) that consisted of 22 statements used to measure the frequency dimensions subscales namely: emotional exhaustion (9 statements), depersonalization (5 statements), and personal accomplishment (8 statements). The response was measured on a seven-point likert scale: ranged from (0= never, to 6=every day).
II- Tool two: ”factors leading to burnout questionnaire” It will be based on a structured questionnaire, developed by the researcher to determine the factors leading to burnout among students enrolled in graduate programs, it will include question related to:
I- Personal factors such as (live events, coping strategies, personal responsibilities, learning style, motivation ect…)
II- Organizational factors such as (leadership style, managerial support, educational environment, resources, ect…)
III- Academic factors, such as (peer supoort, work load, curriculum institutional culture.ect…).The responses of factors leading to burnout questionnaire were measured on five points. Rating scale ranging from 1= (SA) strongly agree, 2= (A) agree, 3= (D) Disagree, 4= (SD) strongly disagree, 5= (N) not applicable.
In addition, socio-demographic characteristics for graduate students were developed by the researcher and identified through special sheet it included questions related to: age, marital status, educational qualification, academic position, and academic department.
- The study tools for data collection were tested for content validity by nine experts in the filed of the study at the Faculty of Nursing, in Alexandria University.
- A pilot study was carried out on 10graduate students from different scientific Nursing departments (not included in the study) to test the clarity and applicability of the study tools and to identify obstacles and problems that may be faced during data collection. According to the results obtained, some statements were reworded.
- Reliability for tool I and tool II were assumed using Cronbach’s Alpha.
- Data collection: Data was collected by the researcher individually through distribution of tool one on each studied subjects in two months.
- By using SPSS program: arithmetic means, standard deviation, and different multiple statistical measures as t-test, correlation coefficient.
- Data were analyzed and tabulated
The following were the most important results of the present study:
1- More than have of graduate students, regardless’ their especiality had moderate level of burnout.
2- Statistical significant differences were found between students’ levels of burnout and their demographic characteristics in term of sex and nationality
3- Medical Surgical followed by gerntological graduate students reported the highest percentage level of burnout.Psychatric nursing and mental health graduate students represented the lowest level of burnout .then after community health nursing. Nursing administration and obstetric and gynecological graduate students have moderate level of burnout.
4- There is a positive correlation coefficient between the occurrences of high and moderate levels of burnout and factors affecting among graduate students.
5- Statistical significant difference was found between academic and organizational factors and level of burnout.
The most important recommendations in this study are:
1- Conducting an orientation program for master students about faculty policies, regulations, innovative teaching methods and evaluation in which enabling them to fulfill their roles, and enhancement of coping abilities should be given to deal with burnout.
2- Social activities must be looked for and the level of communication/mutual influence must be increased instead of preferring loneliness and isolation. This measure will make the person more equipped and resistant against burnout.
3- Faculty administrators should provide students with good academic environment which enhance students’ satisfaction.
4- Recommendation for other studies:
Explore the relationship between personality traits and level of burnout
