Abstract

Cerebrospinal fluid is one of the most disturbing issues that face spine surgeons and endangers patient health and may be life threatening. Through neurological examination and proper investigations including MRI spine which was mandatory to detect site of cerebrospinal fluid leak and to exclude other pathologies and complications. Also CSF culture and sensitivity studies are essential in cases with suspected infections. Bed rest in prone position, compression dressings, usage of carbonic anhydrase inhibitor, drainage of the collected fluid or closed subarachnoid drainage may be successful and a reasonable first choice as a conservative strategy. Surgical re-exploration should be considered in all patients in whom conservative management has failed. Close observation and care is needed with all these strategies to avoid complications and get maximum efficacy in cessation of cerebrospinal fluid leak with minimal morbidities The study was conducted upon 20 patients at departments of neurosurgery in Maadi military Hospital and Assiut University Hospitals illustrating different modalities in management of cerebrospinal fluid leakage after spinal surgery.
