Abstract

Elbow fractures are common injury seen among emergency department
trauma patients accounting for 2-3% of emergency department attendances. Eight to
ten percent of fractures in adults occur in elbow and forearm.
Despite its high frequency, there is no standardized method of diagnosis using
conventional x-ray imaging for trauma patients presenting with elbow pain and
restricted elbow movement, signs of haemoarthrosis and direct or indirect signs of
fracture on plain x-ray imaging studies may be absent.
In this study, history taking, physical elbow examination, plain x-ray, special
test which is our test elbow extension test and computed tomography were our
appropriate tools used for detection of occult elbow fractures.
The present study illustrated the sensitivity and predictive value of elbow
extension test with aid of computed tomography in not to miss any fractures in elbow
after acute trauma in spite of plain x-ray not show any evident fracture.
The study was carried out over one year on 40 of patients. The records of all
patients were reviewed and data were collected prospectively Our study included
patients presented to the Emergency department with direct or indirect elbow
trauma.
The elbow extension test is an examination that measure the ability to fully
extend the elbow, this test proposed as a simple means of excluding the need for
radiograph.
