Abstract

The present study examined the antihypertensive and anti-infertility effects of tomato juice and the possible mechanisms involved in L-NAME-induced hypertensive We aimed to investigate the effect of hypertension on the fertility in male albino rats and examine the efficacy of tomato juice, rich with lycopene to reduce the risk of hypertension and the disturbances in the fertility associated with it.This study was performed on male Wister albino rats initially weighing 165-170 gm, after the acclimation period, rats were divided into four groups (10 each). group (1): Rats were fed a standard diet and served as a normal control group.group (2): Rats were fed a standard diet and received a daily oral dose of tomato juice (2ml/kg b.wt). group (3): Rats were fed a standard diet and administered daily with L-NAME at a dose of 80 mg/kg b.wt in drinking water .group (4): Rats were fed a standard diet with tomato juice and L-NAME in drinking water as in group 2 and 3.All animal groups were received their respective treatment daily for one month. The data recorded:An Increase in systolic blood pressure of male rats in L-NAME group compared to the control group while the decrease in systolic blood pressure in tomato +L-NAME group when compared to L-NAME group. Reduction in sperm count and viability but an increment in sperm abnormalities in L-NAME group compared with control group, while an improvement was recorded in the group treated with Tomato along with L-NAME when compared to L-NAME group. The treatment with L-NAME recorded a significant decrease in FSH while a significant increase in LH level when compared with control group . The administration of tomato juice to L-NAME treated rats resulted in a non-significant changes in the level of the two hormones when compared with the L-NAME group. The group of rats that treated with L-NAME exhibited a significant increase in ACTH and prolactin levels when compared with control rats group. Also the concurrent treatment with tomato juice and L-NAME, a significant decrease in ACTH and prolactin were resulted when compared with the L-NAME group. The administration of L-NAME showed a significant decrease in both testosterone and free testosterone levels . Comparing with L-NAME treated rats, treatment with tomato along with L-NAME a significant improvement was recorded in the level of the above two hormones The antioxidant parameters in testicular and RBCs tissue (GPX , GSH, CAT, SOD) recorded a significant decrease in L-NAME treated rats group when compared with control group. However concurrent treatment with tomato juice and L-NAME , a significant improvement was recorded when compared with L-NAME rats group.L-NAME group MDA level was significantly increased in plasma and in testicular tissue comparing with the control group. However the treatment with tomato along with L-NAME resulted in a significant decrease when compared with L-NAME rats.
