Abstract

The thesis includes two parts:
Part I: Synthesis and reactions of 4-(4-ethylphenyl) or/and 4-
(biphen-4-yl) phthalazine -1(2H)-one.
 Reaction of 2-(4-ethylbenzoyl) and /or 2-(biphen-4-yl) benzoic
acid (1a-b) with hydrazine hydrate in boiling ethanol afforded
compounds (2a-b).
 Reaction of compound (2a) with chloro acetyl chloride in pyridine
afforded compound (3).
 Reaction of compound (2a) with Allyl bromide in dioxane afforded
compound (4).
 Reaction of compound (2b) with chloro ethanol in ethanol afforded
compound (5).
 Reaction of compound (5) with resorcinol, catechol, hydroquinone, 2-
hydroxy benzoic acid and pyrazine-1(4H)-carboxylic acid in boiling
ethanol afforded compounds (6a-e).
 Reaction of compound (6b) with acetic anhydride in dry acetone
afforded compound (7).
 Reaction of compound (2a) with phenyl isothiocyanate in benzene
afforded compound (8).

 Reaction of compound (2a) with morpholine, formaldehyde solution
38% and one DROP of HCl in ethanol afforded compound (9).
 Reaction of compound (2a) with phosphorus pentasulfide in dry xylene
gave compound (10).
 Reaction of compound (2a) with N-ethoxycarbonyl piperazine,
formaldehyde solution 38% and one DROP of HCl in ethanol afforded
compound (11).
 Reaction of compound (2a) with ethyl chloroacetate in pyridine gave
compound (12).
 Reaction of compound (2b) with chloro acetic acid in ethanol afforded
compound (13).
 Reaction of compound (2b) with succinic acid in ethanol afforded
compound (14).
 Reaction of compound (2a) with pyrazolidine-3,5-dione, aldehydes as
benzaldhyde, p-chlorobenzaldhyde and p-methoxybenzaldhyde, and
[simp]HSO4 in ethanol afforded compounds (15a-c).
 Reaction of 2-(4-ethylbenzoyl) benzoic acid (1a) with thiocarbazide in
pyridine afforded compound (16)
