Abstract

Liver fibrosis represents a major medical problem worldwide and is associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Thus, assessing the extent and progression of the fibrosis in the liver is important. Staging of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease is essential for patient management as it allows to identify the severity of the liver damage in order to decide whether or not to start treatment in cases of chronic viral liver diseases to avoid progression to cirrhosis (F4 stage) and to assess the progression or regression of liver fibrosis during treatment.Up till now, liver biopsy is the only gold standard way for evaluating liver fibrosis. However, liver biopsy procedure is invasive, painful and can have life-threatening complications in addition to the possibility of sampling errors. Hence, there is a need for other non-invasive accurate methods for measuring the degree of liver fibrosis. Shear-wave elastography imaging is a new non-invasive imaging technique for assessing liver fibrosis by measuring of the liver stiffness.
