Abstract

The present study was performed in the Pathology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Suez Canal University on 65 archived formalin fixed paraffin embedded blocks obtained by cystectomy and cystoscopic biopsies specimens for urothelial carcinomas stained by (H&E) stain, then stained by anti-claudin-1 antibodies.
This study was conducted on 65 specimens subcategorized into invasive group (n=51) which included 25 specimens of invasive to muscle (T2), 18 specimens of high grade & 7 cases of low grade, 26 specimens of Invasive to lamina propria (T1) 12 specimens of high grade & 14 cases of low grade, Non-invasive group (n=14) which included 10 specimens of non invasive high grade and 4 specimens of non-invasive low grade.
Claudin-1 immunohistochemical expression was detected (positive staining) among 59 specimens (91%) of total 65 specimens and (negative staining) was 6 specimens (9%) of total specimens.
We found statistically significant correlation between claudin-1 immunohistochemical expression and tumor invasion (T-staging) with increase the expression among invasive cases as compared to non-invasive cases.
However; claudin-1 wasn’t significantly correlate with age, gender, tumor grade, tumor architecture (papillary or non- papillary carcinomas) of the studied specimens or their gender.
