Abstract Post-operative pain and delayed wound healing after haemorrhoidectomy are two common challenging problems that face anorectal surgeons and cause great discomfort to patients. Various medical treatments for promotion of faster wound healing and for reduction of pain after haemorrhoidectomy are currently being investigated. Multiple Systemic and topical drugs have been shown to be promising and useful agents in solving these two problems such as metronidazole, sucralfate, antiseptics, antibiotics and local anesthetics, either individually or in combination. Sucralfate is a cytoprotective agent which adheres to mucoproteins and forms a protective barrier at wound sites. It has an antibacterial and angiogenic activity; In addition it activates the nitric oxide which cooperates in the protective action of the drug and may contribute to mucosal integrity and preservation of mucosal microcirculation. |
