Abstract Postharvest rot diseases of banana fruit that included crown, neck, finger (anthracnose) and flower end rots cause considerable losses during transportation and storage. Control of postharvest diseases mainly relies on the use of synthetic fungicides. Application of fungicides are harmful to human health and environment and become ineffective after prolonged use. Thus, safe eco-friendly alternative methods are importantly needed to control postharvest diseases. The present work was conducted to study two main objectives: A- Identification of the pathogenic fungi causing postharvest diseases of banana fruit that was carried out through: (1) survey of postharvest diseases of the most common banana cultivars, and (2) isolation and identification of the causal organisms of postharvest diseases.B- Efficacy of safe eco-friendly alternative fungicides against the pathogenic fungi of postharvest diseases that was conducted through:(1) In vitro antifungal activity of some essential oils like black cumin, cinnamon, clove and lemongrass; sodium salts (benzoate, bicarbonate, carbonate, chloride and hypochlorite); and antioxidant organic acids (benzoic, citric, malic, propionic, salicylic and sorbic acids).(2) Management of postharvest diseases of banana fruit by essential oils, sodium salts, antioxidant organic acids and agar suspension.(3) The effect of the most effective antifungal agents on the quality of banana fruit. |
