The study revealed the following:
The knowledge of female nurses regarding breast cancer was better than that of cancer cervix with a statistically significant difference (P-value= 0.001).
Breast Cancer
The majority of nurses (90.5%) had an optimal knowledge score regarding breast cancer.General knowledge of nurses about breast cancer was optimal by (69.44%) of nurses with reporting that early detection improves treatment results by (94.3%).
About (70%) of nurses had optimal knowledge score about risk factors of breast cancer. Early menarche or late menopause was the most knowledgeable risk factor by (74.4%) while smoking was the least to be known as a risk factor by (63%).
Regarding knowledge about symptoms and signs of breast cancer, (78.33%) of nurses had optimal knowledge score. Change of breast shape or size was the most knowledgeable sign by (94.6%).
BSE was well known as an early detection method by (95.4%) with optimal total knowledge score about early detection methods (70.75%).
Regarding diagnostic methods of breast cancer, mammogram and microscopic examination of tumor sample were known by (90.3%) and (90%) respectively with a total knowledge score= 83.45%.
Total knowledge score about treatment methods was optimal (71.64%). However, only (21.5%) mentioned biological treatment as a method of treatment.
Regarding preventive methods, early detection and sport were well known by (97.1%) and (89.7%) respectively with a total knowledge score= 90.4%.
Regarding educational level, nurses who had diploma degree were about 0.9 times less likely to be optimally knowledgeable than nurses who graduated from faculty (OR = 0.035). The increase in years of experience with one year were associated with more optimal knowledge scores (OR = 1.199).
Cancer Cervix
The majority of nurses (76.6%) had an optimal knowledge about cancer cervix. General knowledge of cancer cervix was suboptimal with a total score= 57.8%, about (80.4%) of nurses reported that early diagnosis improves treatment results. Only (8.9%) knew that cancer cervix is not one of the most common cancers in Egypt.
Knowledge of nurses about risk factors of cancer cervix was optimal (71.8%). Compensatory estrogen after menopause and sexual intercourse under 18 years old were reported by (88.8%) and (66.2%) of nurses respectivelyas risk factors of cancer cervix.
Regarding knowledge about symptoms and signs of cancer cervix, post-menopausal bleeding and dysparunia wereknown as symptoms of cancer cervix by (90.5%) and (63.3%) of nurses respectively. Total knowledge score was optimal (75.9%).
Pap smear was reported by (88.3%) to be an early detection method of cancer cervix with a total knowledge score about diagnosis of cancer cervix= 88.9%.
There was an optimal total knowledge score about treatment methods of cancer cervix (74.4%). Cellular destruction by heat, cryo-therapy or LASER was mentioned as a treatment method by (55.6%) of nurses.
Regarding preventive methods, periodic examination with sampling in 25-50 years aged females and HPV vaccine before 17years were mentioned as useful preventive measures by (89.1%) and (60.2%) respectively.
