Abstract

The present thesis aims at presenting an overview of the semantic-pragmatic interface in Robert Alderman’s ”The Devil’s Brigade” and ”Rome Fell Today”. The necessity of a semantics-pragmatics interface is due to the fact that some pragmatic inferences such as conversational implicatures aretriggered by linguistic items and that pragmatic meaning seems to be more than non-truthconditional such as in explicatures. Moreover, pragmatic meaning can be determined bytruth-conditional meaning, as causal connectives. In addition, inference is not specific to pragmatic meaning (logic is the theory of inference),context is not specific to meaning (action have to be contextualized for instance), andthat accessibility is not specific to meaning either (objects can be more or lessaccessible for instance). So, it means that what is more informative is notstraightforward specific to semantic and pragmatic meaning; that is, pragmatic meaning isstrong and weak, explicit and implicit, truth-conditional and not-truth-conditional.Hence, the border between semantics and pragmatics definitively resembles ageographic border, shaped by landscape, instead of a linear desert border as has been seen in the conversations between the characters in ”The Devil’s Brigade” and ”Rome Fell Today”. These two documentary novels contained different people from different nationalities, titles and backgrounds. Semantic-Pragmatic interface in these two novels was needed because it allows us to have quick and effective information transfer, from non-linguistic source to linguistic one, and vice versa.
