Abstract

Summary
Distraction is a well known coping mechanism in pediatric dentistry, virtual reality was chosen in this study to provide an emotional focused distraction intervention in a trial to modify the children’s behavior from uncooperative into cooperative state.
The present study provides encouraging initial support for the use of virtual reality as a technique for controlling fear and anxiety during dental procedures.
This study was designed to evaluate the change in children’s behavior throughout the dental treatment using Virtual Reality Goggles.
Sixty uncooperative children with score 1 and 2 according to Frankl’s scale of behavior (table1) were selected and assigned into 2 groups:
group 1: children visiting the dentist for the first time.
group 2: children who were previously exposed to dental treatment.
The study included two visits for each child , the first was introductory visit using Tell Show Do technique to explain the whole procedure to the child and application of fluoride was done while wearing the virtual reality goggles.
The second visit treatment of the decayed tooth was done while wearing the virtual reality goggles.
The Frankl Behavioral Rating Scale, pulse rate and oxygen saturation levels were assessed at the beginning and at the end of each visit for every child to evaluate the anxiety level during dental treatment.
Results showed that there was improvement in the behavior of children in both groups but there was no statistical significant difference between the two groups.
from the results of this study it was concluded that the use of the virtual reality distraction system is a beneficial option for patients with fear and anxiety associated with dental treatment either for patients visiting the dentist for the first time or with patients who had experience before.
