Abstract Self-esteem is a personal opinion of self and the way individuals think and feel about themselves. Well-developed language and communication skills have been linked to higher levels of self-esteem. Hearing impairment negatively impacts children through its effect on language, speech, academic achievement, social communication and self- esteem level. The aim of this study is to assess the self-esteem and self-perception about physical appearance and social communication of the hearing impaired pupils in different educational approaches. Also, to identify the educational and communication problems according to teachers opinion. The study was conducted in Alexandria governorate during school year (2016/2017) on 200 HI pupils; 100 pupils from integration schools (50 pupils from mainstreamed classes and 50 pupils from inclusion setups) and 100 pupils from special schools for deaf. A comparative group of 200 normal hearing pupils was taken. The data base was collected from the pupils’ records after permission of authorities. Complete history was taken. Self-esteem was assessed using Rosenberg self-esteem scale. Tailored questions about pupils’ self-perception of physical appearance with device, language, social communication and the opinion of pupils` teachers were taken. The study concluded that differently abled pupils attending special schools for deaf have higher self-esteem scores and better self-perception compared to integration schools. Self-esteem is mostly correlated to age, gender, duration of hearing loss, duration of device use and academic achievement. Finally, questionnaires are beneficial in educational placements for hearing impaired pupils; such that multidisciplinary support may be planned. |
