Abstract
The title of the dissertation is Transculturality and the Road to Self-Discovery in selected Novels by Paulo Coelho, Alice Walker and Chimamanda Adichie. This study aims at defining and exploring transculturality and its importance in replacing other cultural theories that suggest cultural hegemony and clash of civilizations, such as acculturation, interculturality and multiculturalism. It explores the relation between the theory of transculturality and the theme of self-discovery as presented in selected novels by three prominent transcultural writers. This dissertation sheds light on the relationship between colonialism and cultural hegemony. It discusses the theme of self-discovery and the importance of undertaking a journey of transformation, which changes people’s perspective of cultural encounters and attempts a reconciliation between the self and the other in a hybrid world. This study attempts to explore and discuss the concept and theory of transculturality through the works of three transcultural writers and to examine their visions of Africa and America as portrayed in their writings.The three writers:Alice Walker,Chimamanda Adichie,and Paulo Coelho are able to present and tackle transculturality through different treatments,and to provide a transcultural perspective.In The Color Purple and The Alchemist,Walker and Coelho stress the importance of traveling around the world to inspire in people the desire to know.In Purple Hibiscus,Adichie calls for a cultural concept that advocates the idea of a common humanity.
