Abstract

Global warming is defined as the recent and ongoing rise in earth surface temperature. It’s caused by greenhouse gases emission in the air as a result of human activities such as fossil fuel burning in vehicles, create electricity and deforestation. Egypt is at risk for global warming and potentially facing ”catastrophic” consequences which mainly affect human health, so that nurses should be teaching people to buy energy-efficient appliances, use public transportation, reduce, reuse, and recycle materials to decrease the healthcare impact on the environment. (Yazici N., 2017, Chakraborty et al., 2015, Houghton 2010 and Afzal 2007).The present study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitude of Assiut University students regarding Global Warming. This study was conducted at four randomly selected faculties at Assiut University, two theoretical faculties and two practical faculties. A descriptive cross-sectional research design was used to accomplish the purpose of this study and 1300 students were selected through a convenient sample.Three tools were utilized for data collection: Tool I: Socioeconomic scale it included personal characteristics of students. Tool II: A modified Environmental Issue Questionnaire to assess students’ knowledge about global warming. Tool III: A modified Likert’s scale to assess students’ attitude regarding global warming.Data were collected during the period from the first of October to the middle of December 2016. The average time taken for completing questionnaire was around 20-25 minutes. The main findings of the present study:•It was found that nearly two-thirds (64.0%) of studied students were in the age group 20 year and more. Also, more than half of the studied students (53.6%) were males and more than three-fifth of them (63.4 %) were in middle socioeconomic class.• According to parents’ job; more than half of fathers (56.6%) were employed and more than two thirds (69.8%) of students’ mothers were housewives.•More than two third (71.7%) of the studied students mentioned human activities such as the exhaust fumes of cars as the main factor contributing to climate changes. And the majority of them stated that global warming had a negative effect on the human health. • It was found that about half of studied students had poor knowledge toward global warming and the majority of them had positive attitude. •There was a statistically significant difference between students’ knowledge and attitude with regard to their institution type and academic year. There was a statistically significant difference between students’ socioeconomic level and their knowledge.• There was a significant difference between students’ level of knowledge and their mothers and fathers educational level and mothers’ job.•There was no a statistically significant difference between students’ age, sex, residence and their knowledge and attitude.• There was positive correlation between knowledge score and attitude score regarding global warming among the studied students r=0.395 with statistically significance difference.
