Abstract

Keratoconus is an ectatic disorder that manifests itself around puberty. Despite the different ways of management of keratoconus, its management is a continuous field of research. The question to be answered is how to stop or even slow the progression of keratoconus? And what is the optimum way of management with the least rate of complication?
The study is a prospective, non-randomized, interventional clinical study, included a total of 35 eyes of 28 patients with keratoconus diagnosed according to the standard criteria, intervention took place at Dar ElOyoun hospital AlSheikh Zayed branch , starting from period 11/2015 till 6/2016. Diagnosis was based on slit-lamp observation and corneal topography. Keratoconus cases were classified according to the Amsler–Krumeich grading system.
In our study that evaluates the effect of intra-corneal ring segments implantation using femtosecond laser in cases of keratoconus, it was found that there is significant improvement in UCVA and BCVA. These changes were consistent with significant improvement in sphere and cylinder.
There was significant flattening of central cornea with significant improvement in K1, K2 and Km with significant increase in pachy apex.
This new technique, in addition to its efficiency in improving the visual, refractive and keratometric outcomes, is a rather safe technique for management of keratoconus. It delays the need for keratoplasty with its complications. In our study, there were few complications reported varying fromsimple ones as glare that was recorded in two cases to more difficult ones as ring segment extrusion which was also managed efficiently. It is also a simple procedure which is easy to be learnt.
