Abstract

Background: notably, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) is associated with a high rate of improvement or resolution of Type 2 diabetes mellitus and other obesity- associated comorbidities such as hypertension, hyperlipidemia and sleep apnea, in addition to achieving weight loss. Therefore, Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) might play an important role as a metabolic therapy for patients morbidly obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
The aim of this study is to study the effect of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy on Obese Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus as regards control of plasma glucose level.
Patients and methods: This study was designed as a one- armed clinical trial (prospective interventional) study, to evaluate the effect of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy on obese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Fifty patients were included in this study. All of the fifty patients included in this study, underwent laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (LSG). LSG was performed according to National Institutes of Health criteria for bariatric surgery indications. The surgical operation was applied as the previously described technique (Gagner).
Results: There was a highly significant difference between BMI at baseline and at 12 months after operation. There was a highly significant difference between HB A1c, FFG, PPG and at baseline and at 3, 6, and 12 months after operation. There was a highly significant difference between SBP at baseline and 12 months after operation.
Conclusion: Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is simple and effective surgical procedure to achieve a significant weight loss and control of type 2 diabetes mellitus which starts in the early postoperative period, as well as improvement of obesity- related co- morbidity. There is significant reduction in the diabetes medications hence the cost of diabetes treatment and improvement of the quality of life.
